Five Reasons to Invest in Index Funds

Overview First, a quick overview. A stock market index tries to measure a portion of the stock market spectrum. The most famous indexes are the Dow Jones Industrials (30 largest stocks) and then Standard and Poor 500, or S&P 500 (the top 500 US stocks by market capitalization). There are plenty of indexes that track a multitude of industries, capitalizations and other parts of the market. An index fund attempts to mimic the behavior of stocks within a particular index. Diversification - The Closest Thing to a Free Lunch on Wall Street

You may have heard the common old saying "There is no such thing as a free lunch." The saying proves very true in investing in the stock market, as there really is no such thing as a free lunch, or guaranteed returns without any risk. The beauty of the world of finance is that typically those who are willing to take more risks, but do so in a wise manner, are able to earn a better return over the long run than those who want to play everything close to the vest. While it is important to be able to speculate and take some risks when you invest in the stock market, the most important lesson you can learn is to make sure you always diversify your portfolio in the best way possible.

Gambling Or Investing?

A couple of years ago I was teaching a course at a local college and a student, knowing that I was in the investment management profession, stated that she thought investing in stocks was akin to gambling. Was she right? According to my American Heritage Dictionary, gambling is "Betting on an uncertain outcome; Taking a risk in the hope of gaining an advantage; or Engaging in reckless or hazardous behavior." Given the definitions, investing in stocks, bonds, or other securities could be considered gambling. After all, one never knows when they buy a bond if the company will be in business when it comes time to collect and pretty much everyone has figured out the stocks can go down as well as up.

Morning Obituary - Buy and Hold Investing

Based upon what I have been hearing via the market pundits, it appears as if the funeral procession for buy and hold investing has recently left the chapel. Without question the recent turmoil in the markets left most buy and hold followers wondering whether they were lemmings foolishly following the pack over a cliff. That maybe so depending upon your viewpoint, but I am not so sure I am ready to jump on the bandwagon and write it off just yet.
