Preventive Maintenance

Every business requires money in order to operate and in turn make more money. No business can continue to operate without financial resources set aside as operating expense. This is what business is. When you decide to get into business, you invest a certain amount to get your business started. This is what you call Capital Investment. Protecting Your Portfolio - The Cost of Feeling Safe

Life often seems safest when, in fact, it's not. I was reading the January 12, 2004 issue of the New Yorker magazine, which had an article written by Malcolm Gladwell. If you are not familiar with Malcolm's work, he wrote a book called The Tipping Point. I consider his book to be one of the better books I've read. If you have time, check it out from the library and let me know what you think. Malcolm's article was titled, " Big and Bad: How the SUV ran over Automotive Safety ." His article covers reasons behind the rise in popularity of the SUV.

Another Bubble in the Making?

The market has staged a very impressive rally since the March 6th low. At that time the S&P bottomed at 666 and is now around 900. This massive rally has occurred in just two and a half months. Some talking heads in the media are now saying that this is the start of the next bull market. Many call a move of 20% or more a bull market and perhaps by that definition they are correct. However, the decline seen last year should then be called a 'mega bear' as the S&P went from 1576 to 666 in just 18 months. Some market technicians like myself, that follow cycles, were looking for a rally in the market in the month of March.

Russia and Oil - The Tie That Binds

While the macroeconomic links between Russia and oil are well known, I believe that it is useful to review how they work. Because Russia produces so much oil and gas, it is the oil price that determines export and government revenues. The ruble is used as a safety valve to control the impact of these factors on the economy, and that, in turn, determines the absolute level of dollar GDP. THE IMPORTANCE OF HYDROCARBONS Russia produces just under 10 mln bpd of oil, as Ill as 550 bln m3 of gas (also around 10 mln boepd) and large amounts of other commodities, which in recent years have broadly followed oil prices up and then down.

Just between you and me, formal education in business is not the key to learning how to invest. It just makes the learning process easier because you've been introduced to financial terms and concepts in accounting, economics, and business in general. A Sustainable National Monetary Policy - I Want to Invest in America

Faced with the dilemma of financing WWII President Franklin D. Roosevelt received adamant advice to raise taxes and introduce a forced savings program. Instead, FDR wisely followed the advice of Secretary of the Treasury Henry Morgentthau, JR., who working with Peter Odegard, a political scientist specialized in motivating masses (read propaganda) created the War Advertising Council. The result was a whopping $187.5 Billion ($2.5%2B Trillion dollars adjusted for inflation into 2009 dollars) to fund the war effort.
