In 1971 President Nixon took the US dollar off the gold standard, which means that the US dollar was no longer exchangeable for gold, and central banks such as the Federal Reserve could print as much money as they wanted, which is pretty much what the Fed is doing, except they used a nice term called quantitative easing. After all, everybody knows what happens when we try to print money. We get thrown in jail for counterfeiting. One of the places is the stock market, in order to keep the illusion that the stock market is doing well.

Marketing and finance are the cornerstones of a successful business. You might protest and say that, first, you need a good product, but there are countless examples of products that were successful, solely, from marketing, like the pet rock, in the 1970's. Moreover, marketing is not only the collaborator of finance but is also finance's coconspirator. How to Invest in an Era of High-Inflation and a Weak US Dollar
After years of monetary expansion, and now bailouts, there is the possibility that, once the recession is over, will see a devaluation of the U.S. dollar, possibly followed by inflation. Also, if the U.S. dollar is devalued, then all U.S.-based assets will lose substantially. Treasury bills hardly pay anything after inflation. Even Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities (TIPS) will under-perform unless held in tax-sheltered accounts.
